Hat trends so chic, you’ll actually want to be outside in the cold.
It comes down to thinking outside the (hat) box. The gang’s all here when it comes to hats, but you can also pile on all the scarves in your closet—and, worst-case scenario, improvise (you’ll see what we mean).
Bring Back the Beret Sadly, a piping-hot baguette would push this over the edge, but alone, berets are more than just a French-girl stereotype. They can be incredibly warm (just pull it over your ears when you need to) and don’t do much damage to your hairstyle, thanks to the looser fit—a godsend when you have curly or wavy hair.
Pile on a Super-Size Scarf Do you know what a hat doesn’t cover? Your face. Swap it for a scarf—in particular, a giant, oversize version, which covers your neck, face, and hair. Since it doesn’t go anywhere near your roots, it helps you stay cozy without crushing any volume your hair may have. Break Out the Beanie It’s not basic—it’s minimalist! The lowly beanie deserves a round of applause for keeping us warm since high school. And if you have straight hair (or your waves start around your ears), a beanie won’t have any impact on your hairstyle. Plus, there’s no wrong way to wear it. In a bright color, it’s kitschy and fun; in a neutral, like gray, it looks surprisingly polished. Take Up Trapper Hats Kind of the dark horse of hats, trappers exist for one reason: They keep you toasty as hell. But decked out in dark furs (faux or not), they’re utilitarian-meets-fashion in the best way possible. Just don’t expect your blowout to last beneath this. (We consider it a worthy sacrifice.) Get a Little Creative No scarf? No hat? No problem! (We’re just trying to make the best of a bad situation here.) Mostly a worst-case-scenario situation, if you have nothing else to keep your head warm, either pop your collar up high and bury your head into it (extra cool points if you do it with a leather moto jacket) or, if that’s not an option, treat a sweater like a pashmina. With enough confidence, you can get away with pretty much everything.
