New York, NY – The moment the first model hit the runway in her all white-sequined gown, paired with a glamorous ruffled jacket the audience was in awe, and the ‘Drama’ had commenced. This season designer, Anniesa Hasibuan, traded in her pearls from last season for sequins, ruffles, feathers, and gold…lots and lots of gold.
Anniesa Hasibuan, the Muslim designer from Indonesian who went viral last season after showing the first collection with all Hijabi models returned to fashion week for a second season to a full house on Valentine’s Day. Satin pants were layered harmoniously with feathered skirts, velvet blouse and intricate jackets created an effortlessly chic ensemble that could be worn together or as separate pieces. Sporty couture “letterman” blouses with the letter “A” for Anniesa offered a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the collection, while details like “A” embossed leather belts and jeweled leather gloves demonstrated the designer’s impeccable attention to detail.
The collection, entitled ‘Drama,’ was inspired by women and the fact that all that women are passionate, emotional, multidimensional, and strong! Her sparkly beautiful designs show that you don’t have to show skin to be feminine, and that hijabi women are anything, but oppressed.
The designer’s collection of modest wear is made of separates that can be worn and styled to suit a more western fashion palette. A major aim of the designer is to show that modest fashion is universal. She made a relevant and cultural statement once again having all of her models wear hijabs.
The show was cast with Anniesa’s army of diverse models from all over the world, including immigrants, green card holders, and 1st/2nd generation Americans, who marched out two by two for a powerful display celebrating America’s diversity and acceptance of all cultures. As the models cascaded backstage, Anniesa appeared displaying, pride, emotion, strength and her four-month pregnant belly showing that women really can do it all.
Models were all adorned in silver hijabs and make-up from beauty sponsor Wardah, a Halal friendly beauty brand. Notable attendees included celebrities Rondae Hollis Jefferson (NBA Player, Brooklyn Nets), Karlie Hay (Miss Teen USA), Sammi Giancola (MTV’s The Jersey Shore), Serbian Singer – Didi J, singer Aubrie Lee Sellers, American Olympic sabre fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad and editors from Fashionista, Glamour and InStyle.
