As Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid, history was made at New York Fashion Week when Anniesa Hasibuan showed her 2017 Spring / Summer collection with every model wearing hijab. She was also the first Indonesian designer to have her own show at New York fashion week. Hailing from one of the world’s centers of design and fashion, Jakarta, Hasibuan is a rising star in the fashion world. With the collection focused on evening wear, she presented 48 new pieces and the sold out show ended with a standing ovation as Hasibuan walked down the runway.
The founder of Haute Hijab, Melanie Elturk, was in the front row for the show and put things in a historical perspective when she wrote on Facebook,
THIS happened last night — history was made when Anniesa Hasibuan showed at #NYFW with every single model in full hijab — and the show was PACKED. She got a well-deserved standing ovation and the crowd was overwhelmingly not Muslim.
If you watched my snap story you know how I feel but this bears repeating — many believe fashion is frivolous and devoid of meaning — I believe fashion is one of the outlets in which we can start that cultural shift in today’s society to normalize hijab in America so as to break down stereotypes and demystify misconceptions.
A cultural mix of patterns and styles that would look beautiful on the streets of New York, Jakarta, London or Dubai, you have to see this beautiful collection to see the power of fashion in changing perspectives in our world.
